COST CHECK

eBay fees and resale margin

Do not build a buying decision around a remembered fee percentage. Your item, account, listing choices and current eBay terms determine the real cost.

Check the live terms for your account

Before buying stock, open eBay’s current UK seller fees and the fee information shown in your own selling flow. Private and business sellers may be treated differently, categories can differ, and optional services can add costs. MoneySnake uses configured assumptions; it cannot know every account-specific charge.

Build the fee line by line

  • Mandatory selling charges: check what is charged for the category and seller type, and what part of the buyer’s payment is used in the calculation.
  • Optional promotion: record the campaign rate or charge only if you plan to promote the listing.
  • Listing upgrades or shop costs: allocate them where they genuinely apply rather than hiding them in overhead.
  • Currency or international costs: include them when the buyer, listing site or payout creates them.

Postage is not a neutral pass-through

Measure the packed item, price the correct service, and include packaging. If a buyer pays postage, that payment may still interact with marketplace charges. If you offer “free” delivery, the sale price must absorb the whole fulfilment cost. Expensive or fragile products also need an appropriate compensation level and packing method.

Allow for refunds and failed sales

A returned item can create two postage journeys, extra handling and a lower resale value if its condition changes. Cancellation, non-payment and claims also consume time even where some charges are credited. A contingency is a planning allowance, not proof that every risk has been priced.

Protect the margin

  1. Use a conservative completed-sale value for the exact variant.
  2. Enter current charges from the live eBay information for your account.
  3. Add promotion only when it is part of the selling plan.
  4. Quote packed postage, materials and insurance or compensation needs.
  5. Subtract a condition and returns contingency.
  6. Compare the result with your minimum profit and the time likely to be involved.
Fee structures change. This guide deliberately gives no fee percentage. Verify the current eBay UK terms before listing, then use the formula in How to Calculate Resale Profit.
